Destined to Rise Above

Mannatech had the right product at the right time

In 1994, after years of controversy among lawmakers, nutrition experts, manufacturers and consumers, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act, a wide-ranging piece of legislation that for the first time gave “dietary supplement” a legal definition.

For manufacturers in general, this meant official validation of the public’s surging interest in supplements. For Mannatech, a company that had just been launched in suburban Dallas, the act meant a green light just as its revolutionary discovery of glyconutrients came to fruition.

“Prior to 1994, if you wanted to associate a health claim with a product, you had to develop it as a drug,” says Stephen Boyd, M.D., Ph.D., Mannatech’s senior medical director. “The new law instead allowed companies to use their science as educational material in support of a nutritional supplement.”

In Mannatech’s case, the science in question was glycobiology, at the time an obscure field devoted to the study of carbohydrates. At several companies, researchers who later joined Mannatech had been studying the function of these sugar molecules inside the body with a growing focus on the aloe vera plant.

Mannose sugar (acemannan) had been pinpointed as a primary factor in aloe’s beneficial properties. “Our researchers hypothesized that certain sugars represented a new category of nutrients, just like vitamins, minerals and amino acids,” says Sam Caster, chairman, founder and CEO of Mannatech. “We were the first to recognize that, while these sugars are essential to the proper structure and function of every human cell, they are deficient or missing in modern diets.” In 1994, Mr. Caster secured a license to distribute Manapol, a compound derived from aloe vera. The patented process for stabilizing this beneficial molecule was the key technology that he used to launch Mannatech.

Other advances quickly followed, culminating in the introduction of Ambrotose, a unique, patented complex of multiple glyconutrients. Since then, Mannatech’s success has been nothing less than astounding. “I would say 90 percent of it was due to the effectiveness of this new product,” Mr. Caster says. “We knew very early on that we were going to be successful, because we saw such an incredible response from our customers.”

Mannatech is today a worldwide hit, with nearly 30 products aimed at health, nutrition, weight management, sports performance and skin care sold in numerous countries. Hundreds of thousands of independent associates are glad to share the benefits of Mannatech’s products with others, and many of them find even greater satisfaction in the company’s extensive charitable efforts to help medically fragile children in more than 75 countries.

Though much has been accomplished, the best may be yet to come, Mannatech’s leaders say, as glycobiology moves from the footnotes of science textbooks to the front pages of prestigious journals. More than 20,000 peer-reviewed articles have now been published on the biological functions of these sugars, a great vindication in light of the skepticism that once greeted the topic.

“Glycobiology has caught the eye of mainstream medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, and it has become a very hot area of research,” says Robert Sinnott, M.N.S., Ph.D., Mannatech’s chief science officer. “We were one of the first players in glyconutrients, and the first to do it right as a supplement.”

A Few Basis

To help you understand a little about glyconutritionals and what they mean to your health (without expecting you to become an overnight expert!), we'll start with a few words of advice: Don't be intimidated by four words that generally have the same meaning and are often used interchangeably - glyconutrients, sugars, saccharides and carbohydrates. Whichever term(s) you encounter or prefer, glyconutritional Ambrotose complex provides what each of us needs for proper cell-to-cell communication and optimal health at the cellular level, the starting point of wellness.

The essential role that glyconutrients play in offering health support at the cellular level is vitally important to your overall wellness. That's because:

  • Proper cell-to-cell communication equals function.
  • Proper function equals wellness.

Much remains to be discovered about how the human body processes saccharides. However, scientific researchers have learned that eating raw, fresh, unprocessed plant foods that contain saccharides benefits normal cell function and is directly related to many aspects of health. Glyconutrients support the immune system and help your cells communicate.

The Unstoppable

Don Elgin

Olympic Bronze Medalist Sydney 2000
World Championships Silver Medalist France 2002

There are only two differences between paralympian Don Elgin and other pentathletes: one is that Don's preparation adjusting his running of jumping leg takes a few seconds longer than another pentathlete 's when tying their shoe laces; and the second is that his smile would win gold over anyone, any time, any where - no competition. But evidently, the thirty-year-young, father of two on one on the way, has a lot to smile about. Drenched in the Sydney sunshine Don quickly and efficiently secures his jumping leg in place and then with no nonsense hits the track, to show the Team Mannatech committee a thing or two about talent.
"There is no doubt in my mind that the Mannatech products do exactly what they claim they do," Don tells Nicole while being interviewed on the track. "I know I always feel better after training if I have used my Mannatech EMPACT and SPORT before and after. Not only do I get through my current training session, I know that I will be at my best when I go out to train again."
Don Elgin is a sporting great, a man so likable it's unsettling and it's an honour for Mannatech to have such a winner and a grinner on our side. Mannatech wishes you all the success in the world Don and welcomes you again to Team Mannatech.

Optimal Skin Care Frequently Asked Questions

What are the pH levels in each of Mannatech's 7 Skin Care products?

Mannatech's Enriching Eye Cream, Mannatech's Moisturizing Cream, Mannatech's Restoring Serum, Mannatech's Hydrating Balancer and Mannatech's Soothing Lotion have a pH of 5.0. Mannatech's Cleansing Silk has a pH of 9.5.

Why are pH levels important?

Proper chemistry happens around our normal body’s pH or “temperature.” If you get too far off one direction or another, things start to act funny. Molecules change behavior and can even loose their activity altogether. A low pH (smaller number) means your skin is acidic and can more readily oxidize things.

What is squalene oil and where is it derived from?

Squalene oil is derived from Spanish Olives. It is a natural component of the skin and it is considered to be a wonderful emollient (skin softener) that has antioxidant and immunestimulating properties. This moisturizing oil may also help to reduce skin irritation and allergic responses. This ingredient is found in Mannatech's Moisturizing Cream.

It’s What’s Inside That Counts

Recipe for radiance is pure, natural ingredients

Imagine a beautiful garden filled with artificial plants… a newborn baby wearing mascara… a bunch of fresh grapes dipped in purple dye.

Clearly, some things are best left just as nature intended.

At Mannatech, the Coppell-based manufacturer of innovative nutritional supplements, the goal is to support the body’s inherent state of wellness, so it’s only logical to insist on high-quality ingredients that not only come from nature but also work in harmony with nature.

Take, for instance, Mannatech’s Optimal Skin Care System, launched in Japan in May 2006. “Mannatech is the first to use bacteriostatic water in a skin-care line, which eliminates the need for preservatives,” says Scott Schafer, a longtime resident and marketer of skin-care products in Japan. “This water has been purified and enhanced so that bacteria can’t live in it. To Japanese consumers, this is very important because recent news reports there said that preservatives in cosmetics can actually accelerate the aging process.” “While taking out the preservatives,” he continues, “the product line puts in cutting-edge natural ingredients such as trehalose — a moisturizing agent — and artemia extract, plus the water has unique properties that come from filtration with volcanic rocks.”

To consumers on this side of the Pacific, Mannatech is of course best known for its glyconutrient supplements based on its patented Ambrotose formula, a combination of plant sugars essential to communication between the body’s trillions of cells. And with those supplements, one sees the same concern for finding the most potent natural ingredients — a concern that takes Mannatech’s researchers and buyers literally to the remotest parts of the planet. “Currently, Tasmania and Uganda are among our most important focal points,” says Robert Sinnott, M.N.S., Ph.D., Mannatech’s chief science officer. “In Tasmania, we have a major supplier of kelp, from which we extract nutrients used in Ambrotose. In Uganda, we have established relationships with traditional healers and herbalists. We aim to not only help consumers by tracking down high-quality plant-based compounds, but also to help the economies of the countries in which we have partners.”

Gathering the raw materials is just one step in an elaborate process to ensure that consumers obtain the most effective products, company leaders emphasize. “Our product safety monitoring and quality assurance departments are second to none in this industry,” says Stephen Boyd, M.D., Ph.D., Mannatech’s medical director. “Unlike some companies, we do research to verify the efficacy and content of the finished product. Supplement manufacturers are under no legal obligation to show that the active ingredient remains active, so most of them don’t bother.”

On reading the labels of Mannatech supplements, consumers may be surprised to see such wholesome ingredients as carrots, green tea and papaya, but they should not be skeptical, Mannatech’s leaders say. “I can assure you that what we say is in there, is in there,” says company president Terry Persinger. “We also make sure our products are free of what you don’t want in there. Some of our products are even kosher certified.”

Building Awareness

Lemme says Mannatech reinforces its culture with its employees. “We really try to build into the corporate understanding and awareness that every employee is advancing a global mission,” he says. Not only do the employees undergo general training, but strategic and project training, as well. “We have more than 470,000 active associates that we’re supplying this product to,” Lemme says, adding that Mannatech is devoted to encouraging its independent associates’ confidence in the product.

For associates, Lemme says Mannatech looks for people who are open to the changing marketplace. “We are looking for anyone who is sensitive to the changing world of physiological challenges and the quest for a better quality of life,” he says.

Unique education strategy

Mannatech has a unique strategy in place to get the word out about its products. It uses a network marketing structure based on a foundation of 350,000 associates, including doctors and other healthcare professionals, who act as educators on the benefits of the products, Sam Caster explained.

“What this group wants to see is, where’s the science?” he said. “Then our marketing group helps take the language of science and turns it into the language of consumer goods. There’s very little information out there about when works and why, and that’s where Mannatech steps to the plate.”

A primary objective for Mannatech, Caster said, is to help consumers educated themselves about wellness solutions in light of today’s growing healthcare concerns, such as the obesity epidemic and aging Baby Boomer population.

“Our strategy takes a consumer that’s already interested and highly aware, and says, ‘If you’re going to make a decision, don’t you want to make an informed decision?”‘he said. “There is receptiveness to new ideas and new technologies, because I think people realize that whatever we know has not worked. There has to be something missing in the equation because we don’t have that quality of life we’re after.”

The growing recognition of glycomics as a new frontier in the medical and nutrition fields has been another important factor, Caster noted. “Every level of science has cover story articles on this new science,” he said. “There’s a growing acceptance in the scientific community, which to a third-party view of consumers helps validate the standpoint that this concept is real.”

Although health concerns like obesity and aging are critical issues in the US, Mannatech is expanding in other countries as global awareness of health and wellness continues to grow, Caster said. Consequently, Mannatech’s message and marketing strategies stay virtually the same, despite where they are being targeted.

“Every first-world country is facing the same things in terms urbanization and problems with the environment,” he said. “Healthcare is pretty much a global problem, so when you’re talking about wellness and solutions, you’re using that concept around the world without too much of a problem. Every country is saying, ‘What are we going to do to protect our quality of life?”’

The Natural Leader:

Mannatech

Article as featured in Health & Living USA Vol 3, No.6 June 2003 #09/06

Most experts agree that the future of glycomics will be huge.
The biggest impact of glycomics research may be in helping us to understand how to be and stay healthy, how to measure health, and how to optimally support the body at the cellular level.
The future of glyconutritionals is very promising indeed. The wellness industry has been forecast by noted economist and futurist Paul Zane Pilzer to reach $1 trillion by the end of this first decade of the 21st century. Mannatech will continue to lead the industry, developing and bringing better health solutions to people around the world.

Can Glycomics Change the World?
Glycomics Highlighted in MIT Publication
The prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) describes the burgeoning science of glycomics research on sugars and their impact on human health as “one of the ten technologies that will change the world.” While mainstream scientists have recognised and are investigating the potential of synthetic glyco-drugs, their efforts may require years to produce results. But the increased interest in the role of sugars in human health can expand the market for glyconutritional supplements today!

In the February 2003 edition of Technology Review, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology profiled the science of glycomics as a new technology that “…could have an impact on health problems ranging from rheumatoid arthritis to the spread of cancer cells.” Glycomics is the study of sugars and includes glycobiology—the study of the effects of sugars on living organisms.
