Reducing Exposure to Combustion Products in Homes

Take special precautions when operating fuel-burning unvented space heaters.

Consider potential effects of indoor air pollution if you use an unvented kerosene or gas space heater. Follow the manufacturer’s directions, especially instructions on the proper fuel and keeping the heater properly adjusted. A persistent yellow-tipped flame is generally an indicator or maladjustment and increased pollutant emissions. While a space heater is in use, open a door from the room where the heater is located to the rest of the house. Open a window slightly. Your best option is simply not to use an unvented kerosene or gas space heater.

Install and use exhaust fans over gas cooking stoves and ranges and keep the burners properly adjusted.

Using a stove good with a fan vented to the outdoors greatly reduces exposure to pollutants during cooking. Improper adjustment, often indicated by a persistent yellow-tipped flame, caused increased pollutant emissions. Ask your gas company to adjust the burner so that the flame tip is blue. If you purchase a new stove or range, consider buying one with pilotless ignition because it does not have a pilot light that burns continuously. Never use a gas stove to heat your home. Always make certain the flue in your gas fireplace is open when the fireplace is in use.

Keep woodstove emissions to a minimum. Choose properly sized new stoves that are certified as meeting EPA emission standards.

Make certain that doors in old woodstoves are tight-fitting. Use aged or cured (dried) wood only. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for starting, stoking, and putting out the fire in woodstoves. Chemicals are used to pressure-treat wood. Such wood should never be burned indoors. Some old gaskets in woodstove doors contain asbestos. When replacing old gaskets refer to the instructions in the EPA booklet, Asbestos in Your Home, to avoid creating an asbestos problem. New gaskets are made of fiberglass.

Have central air handling systems, including furnaces, flues, and chimneys, inspected annually and promptly repair cracks or damaged parts.

Blocked, leaking, or damaged chimneys or flues release harmful combustion gases and particles and even fatal concentrations of carbon monoxide. Strictly follow all service and maintenance procedures recommended by the manufacturer, including those that tell you how frequently to change the filter. If manufacturer’s instructions are not readily available, change filters once every month or two during periods of use. Proper maintenance is important even for new furnaces because they can also corrode and leak combustion gases, including carbon monoxide.

Ecstatic About Vitamin E

Why all the fuss about Vitamin E and other antioxidants? Well, it seems they may be key weapons in the war against cancer. So where do you get them? And are you getting enough?

Vitamin E is the term used for eight naturally occurring essential fat-soluble nutrients, the most potent of which is alpha-tocopherol. It has received much attention due to its antioxidant properties, helping protect the body's cells against damage caused by free radicals, the unstable by-products generated in the normal production of energy.

Free-radicals can damage cell membranes, interfere with our natural defenses and increase the risk of cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants stabilise free radicals and prevent them from doing further harm to our health.

Natural versus synthetic

Almost all foods contain some vitamin E. However, much of the vitamin E in our diet comes from fat-rich foods like margarine, mayonnaise and peanut butter. Healthier sources of vitamin E include wheat germ, corn and nuts.

Synthetic vitamin E, found in some but not all supplements, is commonly called dl-alpha-tocopherol. Natural vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) is twice as effective as the synthetic version.

Overall wellness begins with cell-to-cell communication which promotes optimal health throughout your body. The Mannatech Optimal Health System is designed to deliver the nutrients, including glyconutrients--or plant-based monosaccharides--that your cells need to "talk" to one another and to support your immune system. The Optimal Health System protects your cells with antioxidants, nourishes your body with vitamins and minerals and supports your hormonal systems to keep your body in balance. Choose the option that is right for you for total wellness!

Vitamin E

Food or tablet?

Is there sufficient vitamin E in the average diet to meet our body's requirements or do we need supplements? The recommended daily intake (RDI) of two pieces of fruit and five veggies per day is supposed to provide us with a wide range of vitamins and minerals. But does it provide enough fat-soluble vitamins? And even if it did, does anyone actually eat the two and five?

One school says that to rely on pills is to accept second best. They claim that the nutrients in supplements differ in their bioavailability (how useful they are to the body once we've swallowed them) and function from those found in whole foods. Grains or apples, for example, offer a lot more than just a single vitamin or mineral. A wide variety of foods will provide thousands of compounds important for health in the balance nature intended: a veritable orchestra of nutrients, playing in perfect harmony under the control of the Great Conductor.

The RDI for a nutrient is defined as the amount required to prevent disease and deficiency in 95 per cent of the population. It is not a measure of what is optimal for good health.

There is evidence from research that the more beta-carotene and vitamins C and E people consume, the better off they are. Some reports show that antioxidants decrease the chance of heart disease and some cancers by between 30 and 70 per cent.

Sometimes it's smart to target certain areas of your body for a little extra help and support. Mannatech's Wellness Management products let you deliver targeted nutrients that help you keep all of your body's systems healthy. It's smart to have all your systems stay in peak condition with Mannatech’s Wellness Management products!

Active kids are healthy kids.

What types of activity is recommended?

A combination of moderate and vigorous activities is recommended.

A moderate activity will be about equal in intensity to a brisk walk, and could include a whole range of activities such as a bike ride or any sort of active play.

More vigorous activities will make kids “huff and puff” and include organized sports such as football and netball, as well as activities such as ballet, running and swimming laps. Children typically accumulate activity in intermittent bursts ranging from a few seconds to several minutes, so any sort of active play will usually include some vigorous activity.

Most importantly, kids need the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that are fun and suit their interests, skills and abilities. Variety will also offer your child a range of health benefits, experiences and challenges.

Remember, any activity that sees your child expend energy is good!

The future of the world depends upon the children, yet the children’s future depends upon us. Tragically, ten million children under the age of six will die this year from preventable diseases. Experts agree that proper nutrition can support the body’s ability to defend against disease and illness. With direct access to world-changing glyconutritional technology, the founders of MannaRelief commit to providing advanced nutritional products to the world’s future—its children. Founded in 1999, MannaRelief is a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit organization that supplies essential nutrition to orphans and children with critical health needs.

Active kids are healthy kids.

Why is physical activity important?

Children between 5 and 12 years of age greatly benefit from being physically active. It can:

· Promote healthy growth and development.

· Build strong bones and muscles.

· Improve balance and develop skills.

· Maintain and develop flexibility.

· Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

· Improve cardiovascular fitness.

· Help relaxation.

· Improve posture.

· Provide opportunities to make friends.

· Improve self-esteem.

How much is enough?

Kids need to do a minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity every day. But remember, more is better – even up to several hours! This can be built up throughout the day with a combination of moderate to vigorous activities.

Vibrant health is no longer a certainty. For many it is intermittent at best. This realization has triggered a global Wellness Revolution, and it's changing the lives of people around the world. Mannatech is on the cutting edge of new technologies that provide what every body needs to stay healthy.

The Enironment

Today we hear a lot about environment problems. Yes, there are many things that politicians need to do, but more importantly we need to each look at what we can do in our own lives. Here are some food ideas to help the environment.

Much of our produce is transported 100s or 1000s of kilometers. Why, when fresh produce if better for you. Grow your own! It’s cheaper and is much better for the environment. Chooks can turn food waste into eggs. If you can’t grow it, buy from ‘growers markets’.

Do without meat a couple of times a week. Legumes such as beans, lentils and peas are protein-rich roods without the negative environmental impacts of meat. Eat sustainable seafood. Some 75 per cent of the world’s fisheries are over fished.

According to the Australian Marine Conservation Society, species to avoid include blu warehou, eastern gemfish, southern bluefin tuna, bigeye tuna, school shark, silver trevally, orange roughy and Alantic salmon.

Better choices include hoki, wild grown barramundi, bream, flathead, whiting and mackerel.

One of the most threatened groups of fish in Australia is sharks (sold as flake). Sharks are the main fish used in fish and chips, so where there is choice, look for other options.

Defend your skin against a harsh world. Pollutants, stress and weather all take a toll on your skin. With Mannatech's skin care product you can protect yourself and maintain healthy, hydrated skin. Combat the outside environment with Mannatech's skin care product and support your skin's natural texture, beauty and elasticity.

Super Goog

Eggs are a nutritious food and, when it comes variety, we’re spoilt for choice. But where to start? To help you, here’s a rundown on the various types available. Caged-hen eggs; free-range eggs laid by hens which spend eight hours a day outdoors; barn-laid eggs from hens that wander a barn floor; omega-3 eggs laid by hens fed a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E; and organic eggs that are produced under a free-range system where the hens are fed a 95 per cent organic diet. After you choose a type of egg, follow these guidelines:
  1. Check for freshness. Look at the date on the carton to determine the age of the eggs.
  2. Buy cool eggs. Eggs age more in one day out of the fridge then a week in the fridge.
  3. Store in your fridge. Keep your eggs in their carton and they’ll last up to five weeks. If you doubt an egg’s freshness, put it in a glass of water. A fresh egg will lie on the bottom, an older egg will stand up, and a floating egg means it goes in the bin.

Your body has about 60 trillion cells. That's where Mannatech's Optimal Health System products are designed to work-at the cellular level, where wellness begins. Mannatech's Optimal Health System includes:

  • Advanced Ambrotose – for people seeking advanced wellness, Mannatech’s glyconutritional blend supports your immune system and facilitates cell-to-cell communication.*

Some takeaway facts to give your children a healthy start in life:

  1. Don’t give up on feeding them vegetables. Perhaps ask an older sibling to encourage trying new foods with your child and keep repeating exposure little and often - 10 is the magic number.
  2. Don’t ban anything, it will only reinforce the association with unhealthy foods.
  3. Use non-food rewards such as sticker charts.

Feed them foods containing natural sugars such as:

  1. Glucose - Fruits, vegetables, table sugar, honey, milk products, cereals
  2. Fructose - Fruits, vegetables, honey
  3. Galactose - Milk products
  4. Sucrose - Fruits, vegetables, table sugar, honey
  5. Lactose - Milk products
  6. Maltose - Malt products, some cereals

Don’t make the mistake of feeding them the same portion as you would yourself. Here’s a guide to how many calories per day your child needs:

  1. 1-3 years: (boys) 1,230 - (girls) 1,165
  2. 4-6 years: (boys) 1,715 - (girls 1,545)
  3. 7-10 years: (boys) 1,970 - (girls) 1,740
  4. 11-14 years: (boys) 2,220 - (girls) 1,845
  5. 14-18 years: (boys) 2,755 - (girls) 2,110

Your child’s lunch should contain 1/3 of their daily calories. In simple terms a 5/6 year old should be getting a plate with following proportions of food: ½ plate of fruit/vegetables, ¼ of protein (for example, either meat or cheese) and ¼ starchy food such as pasta.

  1. For an extra edge in the morning make sure you eat a breakfast of complex carbohydrates- wholemeal breads and cereals, beans, and eggs.
  2. Parents play a direct role in children’s eating patterns. Set the example by eating at the table with your children and save the TV until after dinner.
  3. Avoid supersize, king-size or 25% extra food.

Did You Know..?

  1. A 49g bar of Dairy Milk contains 5.5 teaspoons of sugar
  2. 100ml of Coke contains 2.12 teaspoons of sugar
  3. A standard 330ml can of Coke contains 7 teaspoons of sugar

Plant Power: Bioflavonoids

Chances are you've never heard of ‘bioflavonoids'. Despite their low profile, some folks believe them to be among nature's most potent antioxidants.

While bioflavonoids are sometimes known as vitamin P, they aren't in fact vitamins, or minerals for that matter. They're phytochemicals, or plant chemicals, which is probably where the ‘P' comes into it.

Do we need them?

Well, not in the sense we need oxygen and water. They're often called ‘functional foods', having a value to us beyond the strictly nutritional. So, no, we don't need them, but many would argue we'd be better off if we had more of them.

Since up to 80 per cent of the most common cancers are diet related, and since bioflavonoids and other phytochemicals are touted as having potent antioxidant effects, the National Cancer Institute in America is providing plenty of research.

Where do you get them?

Bioflavonoid compounds include anthocyanins, catechins, flavanones, flavones and flavonols. Catechins are the highly concentrated antioxidants found in green tea that are responsible for its widely publicised anti-cancer effects, while soy products and red clover are full of flavones, which have been targeted in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer. The main dietary source of bioflavonoids is the white segment, or ring, of (especially citrus) fruit and vegetables.

What they (might) do

At the very least, it seems likely bioflavonoids promote the body's absorption of vitamin C, which itself has well known antioxidant effects. Apart from the anti-ageing properties central to all antioxidants, there are research results suggesting that bioflavonoids in tea may help to reduce the risk of heart disease, possibly by dilating the coronary arteries and preventing the deterioration of artery walls in atherosclerosis. Then there's the anti-cancer activities mentioned above and elsewhere.

Because of the newness of the work into phytochemicals, there are very few hard and fast answers about their effectiveness in improving health and delaying the symptoms of ageing. But since adverse effects are rare, the addition of soy products, green tea and citrus pith to your diet would seem like a good thing.

That said, like most foods, soy products are best consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Recent research suggests women with breast cancer should avoid taking soy supplements.

Better Breakfast Ideas for Kids

Research has revealed that up to one in five Aussie kids skip breakfast. So how do we address this alarming trend? A greater understanding of why breakfast is important for children (and adults alike) may help promote better nutrition and health outcomes for all.

Breakfast is important for kids because it can help them:
• meet their daily nutritional needs, including the required intake of vitamins and minerals, that are essential for growing bones and muscles,
• improve their attention span and academic performance in the classroom,
• improve their behaviour at school because their tummies are satisfied, and
• keep their weight under control and their blood cholesterol and glucose levels in check.

Most families are pressed for time early in the morning, with parents and kids scrambling to get ready for work and school and other commitments. This shouldn’t mean breakfast is sacrificed in the rush.

Suggestions for nutritious breakfasts include:
• cereals topped with fruit and milk,
• toast with peanut butter, honey, marmalade, Vegemite or jam,
• a boiled or poached egg and toast,
• a fruit-filled breakfast bar and yogurt,
• fruit and yogurt or a fruit smoothie, or
• a bowl of porridge with sultanas

Meals on the run
If you’re really pressed for time, then some liquid breakfast cereals may offer a convenient means of getting a low-fat, high fibre meal quickly. Remember however, that having regular breakfast on the run will not help your kids develop good breakfast eating habits.

Children pick up on the fact that their parents aren’t having breakfast and assume this to be an acceptable behaviour. If parents recognise the nutritional importance of breakfast, the kids are more likely to follow their example.

Getting kids involved in making their breakfast might also help them eat it too! For example, encourage them to get their own cereal or perhaps to pour the milk into their bowl. Older and more responsible children could make their own toast or even use a microwave to cook baked beans.

Once you have found a healthy meal that tempts the children's early morning tastebuds, lock in a breakfast routine to save time when you're rushed. This might mean putting out cereal bowls, spoons and ingredients at night, ready for action at sunrise.

To avoid boredom, keep in-season fruit on hand to dress up cereals. And aim to be a little more adventurous on weekends and holidays; try fruit pancakes and other treats!

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and supplementing your diet are your best game plan! Feeling terrific and preserving youthful vitality may be less difficult than you ever imagined it could be. Let Mannatech's Optimal Health System be the nucleus of your lifetime health program. It will help you feel more confident, energetic, alert and less stressed-ready to make every day a great day! Mannatech's glyconutrient and phytonutrient supplements are especially formulated for children in their growth years - and they supply the nutrients missing from life in the fast-food lane.

The Immune System

Healthy functioning of the immune system is of paramount importance to everyone since it controls our ability to fend illness and disease. The basic science of staying healthy is to optimize your bodies systems. The world is filled with pathogens microbes, toxic pollutants and stress, and so the body requires a vigorous and vigilant immune system.

The following are some of the common causative factors that weaken our immune system not listed in any order of importance:

  1. Pathogens – Ex. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites.
  1. Toxic pollutants – Ex. Smog, industrial smoke, cigarette smoke, harmful vapors, vehicle emissions, pesticides, herbicides and the list goes on and on.
  • Toxins in your water
  • Toxins in your working environment
  • Toxins in your home
  • Toxins in the air you breathe
  • Drugs in your drinking water – it is an unfortunate truth that we are all taking drugs. More than 100 published reports done on drinking water in cities all over the world confirm that we are getting pharmaceutical drugs in our water every day!
  1. Potential antigens – Ex. Medications, pollen, dander, toxins, chemicals.
  1. Foreign cells and tissues – Ex. Malignant cells such as from transplanted organs, or transfused blood.
  1. Stress – Stress is a definite culprit that weakens the immune system because it affects the productions of interferon and cortisol.
  • Environmental stress
  • Physical stress
  • Mental stress
  1. Digestive disturbances – can also result in the build-up of toxins because if inadequate elimination thus the accumulated toxins may overpower the immune system and weaken it.
  1. Depleted nutrients – our modern world has
  1. Poor food and dietary choices
  1. Lack of essential nutrients – Today, foods have less nutritional value due to modern farming methods. It now takes 60 servings of spinach to get the same amount of iron as one serving in 1948. Today, you have to eat 25 cups of spinach a day to get the RDA for vitamin E.
  1. Lack of proper exercise – Exercise is not merely important. It is absolutely essential. If nothing is done to prevent it, we gradually lose muscle tissue as we age, becoming weaker, and less flexible as a result. There are several problems associated with this, the most obvious being a decrease in metabolism resulting in increased body at, which is a primary risk factor for heart disease and several other serious health conditions such as diabetes. Not so obvious though, are the effects of a lack of exercise on one’s bones.

Mannatech was founded in November 1993 by current CEO and Chairman Sam Caster. During its first two years, the company focused on products that contained aloe vera extract. Mannatech announced its flagship product, Ambrotose, 1996 based on the discovery that the body’s immune system needs eight plant-based sugars – also known as glyconutrients – to function properly.

New WHO report tackles children's environmental health

27 JULY 2007 | GENEVA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) is today releasing the first ever report highlighting children's special susceptibility to harmful chemical exposures at different periods of their growth. This new volume of the Environmental Health Criteria series, Principles for Evaluating Health Risks in Children Associated with Exposure to Chemicals, is the most comprehensive work yet undertaken on the scientific principles to be considered in assessing health risks in children. It highlights the fact that in children, the stage in their development when exposure occurs may be just as important as the magnitude of the exposure.

The scientific principles proposed in the document for evaluating environmental health risks in children will help the health sector, researchers and policy makers to protect children of all ages through improved risk assessments, appropriate interventions and focused research to become healthy adults.

"Children are not just small adults" said Dr Terri Damstra, WHO’s team leader for the Interregional Research Unit. "Children are especially vulnerable and respond differently from adults when exposed to environmental factors, and this response may differ according to the different periods of development they are going through. For example, their lungs are not fully developed at birth, or even at the age of eight, and lung maturation may be altered by air pollutants that induce acute respiratory effects in childhood and may be the origin of chronic respiratory disease later in life."

Air and water contaminants, pesticides in food, lead in soil, as well many other environmental threats which alter the delicate organism of a growing child may cause or worsen disease and induce developmental problems. Over 30% of the global burden of disease in children can be attributed to environmental factors.

Many Mannatech associates actively support MannaRelief Ministries, a not-for-profit organization founded by Sam Caster in 1999. According to Mannatech, MannaRelief has aided children in more than 30 countries and has distributed glyconutritional enhancement products through more than 300 ministries worldwide.

Glyconutrients

Most of us have been taught that we need only three groups of nutrients to maintain proper wellness. Traditional nutrition education taught that we not only had to eat right, but we also had to make sure we consumed sufficient essential vitamins and minerals, plus essential fatty acids and amino acids.

Glyconutrients work to support immune function—making them ideal for a person’s immune system.

First on the “Most Wanted” List

We have also learned that glyconutrients are important. We can read and hear about vitamins, minerals and herbals all day long, but without cell-to-cell communication, none of them can work.

Every cell in every human organ and system requires saccharides glyconutrients. These are the only dietary supplement that can be supportive and helpful in virtually every function of the body.

Eating for energy

Eating well and regular exercise can help to improve your body’s energy levels.

Carbohydrate foods are the best source of energy for the body. Carbohydrate foods are stored in the body in the form of glycogen in your muscles and liver. When your glycogen stores are low this results in fatigue and makes exercise difficult.

energy drainers

  • Alcohol;
  • Excess caffeine;
  • Dehydration;
  • An unbalanced diet;
  • Dieting;
  • Skipping breakfast and going for long periods without eating;
  • Lack of sleep and rest; and
  • Lack of exercise.

improving energy levels

  • Don’t diet;
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet, with a variety of foods from each of the food groups;
  • Don’t skip breakfast;
  • Eat small regular meals and snacks to prevent hunger and keep up energy levels;
  • Choose mainly slowly digested (low GI) carbohydrate foods such as oats, pasta, noodles, legumes, grainy bread, fruit, yoghurt, milk and soy milk - these foods give you longer lasting energy;
  • Avoid alcohol, particularly in excess;
  • Drink plenty of water and avoid too much caffeine; and
  • Exercise regularly and ensure you get enough rest and sleep.

Offering a solution for overall wellness is Mannatech's commitment. Mannatech’s products help to build and maintain total health by balancing chemistry, nutrition and development through cell-to-cell communication. These individual units work together to promote optimal health. This disruptive-technology creates a unique opportunity for optimal health.

HIV, cancer link found

AIDS sufferers and transplant patients are at a much higher risk than the general population of developing a range of cancers, Australian research has found.

A new study, published in The Lancet medical journal, suggests a link between a depleted immune system and 20 different types of cancer and could be a breakthrough in the understanding of the causes of the malignancies.

Lead researcher at Sydney's University of New South Wales, Professor Andrew Grulich said the research looked at two groups -- those infected with HIV/AIDS and kidney transplant patients.

"Immune suppression is really the only thing they share,'' he told AFP.

"What we found is that the extent of cancer occurrences in these two populations was very similar. Both had increased rates in a wide variety of cancers.''

The research analysed the results of 12 previous studies completed in Australia, the US, Europe and Canada and involving more than 444,000 people with HIV/AIDS and some 32,000 organ recipients.

It found that of the 28 cancers studied, both groups were at a significant risk of developing 20 of them including cancer of the liver, stomach, cervix, eye, lip, mouth and penis.

HIV/AIDS patients were found to be 11 times more likely to develop Hodgkin's lymphoma while those who had undergone a transplant were almost four times more likely to develop the disease.
Grulich said most of the 20 cancers were mostly linked to infection.

He said for those cancers not linked to viruses or bacteria, such as breast and prostate cancer, both groups had similar rates to the general population.

"Until now, the accepted wisdom was that there were only three cancers associated with HIV -- this paper finds that it is more like 20,'' he said.

Grulich, who works at the university's National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, said the findings could overturn the previously held view that some of these cancers were linked to lifestyle risks such as smoking and sexual practices rather than infection.

"We believe that the finding points to an immune deficiency and not those other risk factors,'' he said.

The results could change way HIV/AIDS patients are treated, he added.

"This evidence suggests that immune deficiency is associated with risk of cancer and this suggests we need to maintain people's immune systems at a higher level -- and that might mean putting HIV patients on anti-retroviral drugs earlier than is currently the case,'' he said.

The research comes ahead of a major international conference on HIV/AIDS which will take place in Sydney on July 22-24.

Breastfeeding and the Immune System

The importance of breastfeeding newborns is now generally recognized throughout the world. Not only are immediate benefits to the health of nursing infants apparent, but there are lasting effects of breastfeeding on the immune system, resulting in enhanced protection against infection, and a decreased risk for certain inflammatory diseases. Specifically, breastfeeding confers protection against gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases and otitis media through antibody-dependent factors, and has been associated with lower global morbidity and mortality. There is also evidence to suggest that premature infants have a more critical requirement for breast milk than full term infants. Protection against insulin-dependent diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, and childhood cancer have also been associated with breastfeeding, although prospective studies are needed to confirm these observations.

Breastfeeding is now recognized as a critical factor in protecting newborns against infections, particularly in developing countries. For example, the World Health Organization has indicated that increasing breastfeeding by 40% would reduce respiratory deaths by 50% and diarrheal deaths by 66% worldwide in children less than 18 months of age. Exclusive breastfeeding decreased the risk of dying from respiratory infections by 3.6-fold compared with formula or cow’s milk feeding and halved the incidence of diarrhea. This is quite understandable when one considers the many anti-infection components in breast milk.

Glycoscience is the broad term for the study of structure and function of sugars (glyco is the greek work for sugar) in the body. These healthy sugars are the foundation of glyconutrients, ingredients found in Mannatech’s proprietary products created to help our individual cells communicate. You may not be receiving these beneficial sugars in the right amounts from the food you eat. That’s where Mannatech offers hope. Mannatech leads the industry in glyconutrient technology around the world and strives to offer better solutions for global health.

The flu and you: help stop the spread

8 June 2007

Education materials will be distributed through general practices and community pharmacies to inform Australians about how to reduce the spread of influenza.

‘The flu and you’ brochure and poster series is a reminder of hygiene practices that should be adopted to reduce the spread of the highly contagious respiratory illness.

The production of these materials follows a recommendation by the Australian Health Protection Committee to remind Australians about the importance of adopting simple hygiene practices that are critical in reducing the spread of infection, particularly in the event of an influenza pandemic.

The flu virus can travel through the air when a person coughs or sneezes. It can then survive on surfaces for several hours, remaining a source of infection for others. There are, however, simple things everyone can do to help stop the flu spreading:

  • covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough;
  • washing your hands regularly and properly;
  • cleaning household, school and workplace surface areas;
  • not sharing personal items such as eating and drinking utensils and food; and
  • avoiding close contact with other people and staying home when sick.

Most healthy adults will recover from influenza within a few days. However, some people, especially those aged 65 years and older and people with certain chronic medical conditions, can suffer very serious, even fatal complications.

Annual vaccination, good personal hygiene and protecting others through staying at home when ill are important prevention measures for influenza.

The Commonwealth Government will provide more than $30 million this year for free influenza and pneumococcal vaccine for all Australians aged 65 years and over and for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over, or 15 to 49 years with specific risk factors.

The materials can be found at www.health.gov.au/fluandyou

For consumers looking to live healthier and nutritionally enriched lives, Mannatech Inc. offer hope. Based in Coppell, Texas, Mannatech sells more than 24 proprietary and scientifically validated glyconutritional supplements and products for adults and children that address health and wellness issues, weight management and skin care.

Echinacea more than halves cold risk

ECHINACEA may not only help reduce the symptoms of a cold but may help prevent infection with some cold viruses, US researchers said today.

People who took echinacea had a 58 per cent lower risk of catching a cold, according to the researchers, who did not study the herb's effects directly, but looked at the results of 14 studies in an approach called a meta-analysis.

Dr Craig Coleman, of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy, who led the research, cautioned that the studies only involved 1600 people and involved various echinacea products.

But even so, "all the studies trended toward reducing a patient's odds of developing a cold".

He said none of the studies was large enough - they didn't have enough patients - "to prove it statistically".

Dr Coleman's study, published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases, is one of the few to take a look at the efficacy of echinacea, a widely-used product derived from several different species of flower.

"Someone needs to do a really large, well-done, randomised trial. That is unlikely to occur because there is a lack of funding," Dr Coleman said.

Drug companies could not patent such a widely used herbal product, he said.

In 2005, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found echinacea was of no benefit in stopping colds.

But Dr Coleman said it only looked at part of the picture.

"In that study what they did was they took healthy volunteers and they inoculated them, put a little Q-tip (cotton swab) up their nose. The problem is there are more than 200 kinds of viruses that cause colds."

The team involved in that particular study only looked at a rhinovirus.

"So maybe it doesn't work against that kind of virus, but it does against the other 199 kinds."

Dr Coleman said it also appeared as if echinacea reduced the duration of a cold by 1.4 days on average.

One of the studies looked at echinacea used together with with vitamin C, another common cold remedy, and that one showed the two together reduced the number of colds by 86 per cent.

The term echinacea refers to parts taken from nine related plant species indigenous to North America.

It was used originally by Native Americans and is now the most commonly used "nutraceutical" product - a catchall term that refers to herbs and some supplemented foods.

Dr Coleman, a pharmacist, said it appears to stimulate the immune system, although no one quite knew how it worked.

It might also cause harmful effects, he said.

"While echinacea is generally regarded as safe, it hasn't undergone any long-term safety evaluation," Dr Coleman said. "So you should use it with caution."

Patients with autoimmune diseases such as lupus and multiple sclerosis should be particularly careful, he said.

In addition, echinacea affects a liver enzyme that breaks down some drugs, so using it with prescription medications could cause drug interactions.

Eat food that 'fills you up'

June 20, 2007

Foods that fill you up without packing a ton of calories can help in the battle of the bulge, results of a new study suggest.

In the study, obese women who reduced the "energy density" of their diet by cutting their intake of fats and adding more fruits and vegetables lost more weight over a 12-month period, and felt less hungry, than did those who simply reduced their fat intake.

"Incorporating low calorie-dense foods into the diet is an effective strategy for lowering calories and reducing hunger when you're trying to lose weight," study co-author Dr Julia A. Ello-Martin, of Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania, said.

"This is an approach that allows you to focus on the foods that you should be eating" rather than focusing on restricting calories, she added.

One of the reasons people don't stick to a weight-loss diet is hunger. Ello-Martin and her colleagues speculated that a diet that controls hunger by encouraging dieters to fill up on low energy-density foods may improve adherence as well as increase weight loss.

For the study, 97 obese women were randomly assigned to a group that was counseled to decrease their intake of fat or one that was told to decrease their fat intake and increase their consumption of filling, low energy-density foods, particularly fruits and vegetables. The study participants were not forced to meet any daily goals for their total caloric intake or to limit the amount of calories they consumed from fats to a specific amount.

Twelve months later, weight had come off the women in both groups, the investigators report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The women in the fruit and vegetable group, however, lost 7.9 kg (17.4 pounds), in comparison to 6.4 kilograms (14 pounds) among the others.

The women in the fruit and vegetable group also reported experiencing less hunger than did the women who merely reduced their fat intake, study findings indicate.

Although the study lasted only one year, Ello-Martin speculates the dieters may be able to maintain their weight loss and dietary changes over a longer period.

"There is potential for people to sustain the diet and weight maintenance because it is food focused," she said. "They are getting to eat foods that are helping them not feel hungry."

What's more, she said, the study "didn't have that hideous approach of having to count calories every day."

Elettra Rossellini Wiedermann, on the ‘faces’ of Lancome, and a long-time greenie life her mother Isabella Rossellini, was worried that her globetrotting work for the cosmetics brand was at odds with her environmentally friendly lifestyle. So she asked the company if it would join the carbon-offsetting program Carbonfund.org to make up for her flying time. Lancome thought it was a great idea, and at the same time decided to put it into practice for Wiedmann’s fellow spokes models – Sharlom Harlow, Daria Werdowy, Ines Sastre and Selena Breed. It’s all part of Wiedemann’s approach to life. “People aren’t anxious to get rid of luxuries. We don’t want to be in a can wearing animal skins, but you can be conscious of what you’re doing without changing your lifestyle in a big way,” The 23-year-old said recently. “It’s a lot of little things, but lots of little things add up to a big thing.”

For the past five years, sales of natural and organic cosmetics have been growing at a rate of 18 per cent a year. The US leads the world, with sales of natural personal care products passing $5.5 billion a year in 2005 and steaming towards $8 billion by the end of 2008. According to a recent report from specialty researcher Organic Monitor, sales of natural and organic beauty products in Europe passes $2 billion for the first time in 2006. In the UK, one in five cosmetics products now falls into the natural basket.

The Japanese, meanwhile, are the world’s third largest buyers of natural beauty products, and they’re also leaders in organic technology, Mannatech’s Optimal Skin Care System, recently launched in Australia, uses a preservative-free detoxifying water technology.

Why use supplments?

Laxatives

Overuse of laxatives can result in poor absorption of vitamins and minerals from food, by hastening the internal transit time. Paraffin and other mineral oils, increases the loss of fat soluble vitamins a, E and K. Other laxatives used to excess can cause large losses of minerals, such as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

Fad Diets

Bizarre diets that miss out on whole groups of foods can be seriously lacking in vitamins. Even the popular low fat diets, if taken to an extreme, can be deficient in vitamins A, D and E. Vegetarian diets, which exclude meat and other animal sources, must be very skillfully planned to avoid vitamin B12 deficiency, which may lead to anaemia.

Overcooking

Lengthy cooking or reheating of meat and vegetables can oxidise and destroy heat susceptible vitamins such as the B-group, C and E. Boiling vegetables leaches the water-soluble vitamins B-group and C. As well as many minerals. Light steaming is preferable. Some vitamins, such as vitamin B6, can be destroyed by irradiation from microwaves.

Food Storage

Freezing food containing vitamin E can significantly reduce its levels once defrosted. Foods containing vitamin E exposed to heat and air can turn rancid. Many common sources of vitamin E, such as bread and oils are nowadays highly processed, so that the vitamin E level is significantly reduced or missing totally. This increasing the storage life of the bread but can lower nutrient levels. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which defensively inhibits oxidative damage to all tissues. Other vitamin losses from food preserving can include vitamins B1 and C.

Complementary Medicine Gains Government Support

November 24, 2006

Blackmores welcomes the Commonwealth Government’s $5 million in dedicated funding through the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) which will add to the growing body of complementary medicine research.

This research funding will build the existing body of evidence for complementary medicines, build research capacity, provide a point of co-ordination for research, and increase community knowledge.

“The funding demonstrates the Government’s commitment to research in this area of healthcare,” said Marcus Blackmore.

“Seventy per cent of Australians use natural healthcare products and one in three health consultations in Australia is with an alternative health practitioner.”

The funding was announced by Minister for Health and Ageing, Tony Abbott, yesterday. In February 2004, Mr. Abbott commented: “One of the great things about what might broadly be described as the complementary health sector, is that it is the only major part of our health industry which [focuses on] wellness as much as sickness. The traditional model treats disease … and somehow we’ve got to move from only seeing people in our health sector when there’s something wrong with them, to doing what we can to ensure that people don’t get sick in the first place.”

The report released by the Expert Committee on Complementary Medicines in the Health System in 2003 acknowledged the need for government funding for further research into complementary medicines claiming that, “there is a social responsibility for government to fund such research.” It highlighted the funding disparity between research for complementary medicines and drugs and called for this to be addressed.

Mannatech is at the forefront of the complementary medicine field.

The Common Cold

The common cold is probably the most frequently occurring illness in humans worldwide. A cold is an inflammation of the respiratory system (airways and lungs) caused by a viral infection. These viruses are usually spread by one person coughing and sneezing and another unlucky person breathing in the germs. Now you know why it’s so important to cover your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing! The average adult has tow to three infections per year and young children can have up to seven cold annually.

Cold, hard facts

· Damp, cold, or bad weather doesn’t increase the chances of getting a cold.

· Doctors believe a cold lasts seven days without treatment and one week with it!

· The only way to get rid of a cold is for the body’s immune system to make antibodies t destroy the virus. This usually takes three-to four days.

· Antibiotics that fight bacteria are useless against viruses that cause colds.

· Cough mixtures, antihistamines and other medications provide only temporary relief of the symptoms.

· Taking vitamin C probably doesn’t prevent getting colds but it may reduce their severity and duration.

Whether or not you get a cold after you’re exposed to a virus depends on how ready your immune system is to fight infection. Factors that can impair normal immune function include old age, smoking, stress, poor nutrition, fatigue and lack of sleep.

“The world as a whole is becoming much more aware of the need for wellness, rather than just the need to manage illness,” says Ronald D. Norman, Mannatech’s vice president of international finance. “And with science increasingly validating the essential role of the glyconutrients in our patented and patent-pending products, Mannatech is uniquely positioned to provide the missing ingredient in the wellness puzzle.”

Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is a condition in which hardening and narrowing of the coronary arteries diminish blood flow to the heart. Coronary artery disease occurs when the coronary arteries develop atherosclerosis which is a build up in the arteries of plaque and fatty deposit that narrows the artery thus reducing the amount of oxygen rich blood that the heart must have. The heart must have a continuous flow of oxygen to function normally and the clogged up arteries prevent this, which weakens the heart muscles. As this develops, it causes ischema that damages the heart muscles. The two major complications that may occur from coronary artery disease are angina and heart attack.

Angina is a heart condition in which chest pains develop when the heart is not getting enough oxygen from the coronary arteries. This is usually severe chest pain that can also cause pain in the arm and shoulder. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot cuts off most of the blood supply to the heart. If the coronary artery disease continues over a long period it could cause heart failure. Heart failure is not an emergency condition but over time it is dangerous. Heart failure is when the heart muscles are weakened to the extent that the heart is not able to pump enough blood for the entire circulatory system. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.

The cause of coronary artery disease is a sedentary life style, smoking, no exercise and no weight control. The most effective preventative and most effective treatment is a change to a healthy lifestyle of proper nutrition, exercise and weight control. Healthy nutrition means to eat no refined sugars or carbohydrates, eat fruits, vegetables, lean protein, cold-water fish, sprouted grain bread and fiber. The exercise program should be thirty minutes, three to six times per week. Helpful food supplements are multivitamins, CoQ10, and fish oil. For fiber eat two tablespoons daily of ground flax seed mixed with water, fruit juice, or soymilk.

The Future of Wellbeing

Glycobiology has emerged as a new technology only in the past decade. So what’s in store for the future?

For Mannatech it’s a form of “genetic blueprinting”. “We are currently developing the first generation of nutrigenetics/nutrigenomics tools, to help guide consumers toward specific health products in our range,” explains Robert Sinnott (chief science officer and vice president of research and development of US based Mannatech, a company that specializes in glyconutritional science).

Using these tools, an individual will be able to take a DNA test to determine if they have genetic factors which put them at a higher risk of certain health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and immune disorders.

“Based on this profile, they can then follow recommendations for proven ways to reduce these risk factors, such as increasing intake of certain nutritional substances,” Sinnott says.

Human genetic constitution has changed relatively little in 40,000 years, but what we eat and how we live has changed dramatically, which is why we sometimes need to turn to supplementation to redress the balance. Sinnott aggress, “While you may already take vitamins, mineral, amino acids and enzymes, glyconutritional supplements provide the “missing link” that will help you preserve your vitality.”

Study by Histochemical Methods

Glycoconj J. 2000 Nov 17

The carbohydrate deposits detected by histochemical methods in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampal formation of patients with schizophrenia, Down's syndrome and dementia, and aged person.

Nishimura A, Ikemoto K, Satoh K, Yamamoto Y, Rand S, Brinkmann B, Nishi K.

Department of Legal Medicine, Shiga University of Medical Science, Seta-tsukinowa-cho, Otsu, 520-2192, Japan.

Post-mortem brain tissue was obtained from 28 patients with brain disorders, of which 15 had clinically diagnosed schizophrenia, 6 Alzheimer type dementia, 5 dementia with tangles and 2 cases of Down's syndrome.

The controls were 22 cases from autopsies without brain disorders or with no known episodes of brain disorder. The tissues were stained for the detection of carbohydrate deposits in the hippocampal formation, using lectin, immunohistochemical and conventional staining methods. The staining revealed the existence of spherical deposits in the inner and middle molecular layers of the dentate gyrus in the hippocampal formation which contained fucose, galactose, N-acetyl galactosamine, N-acetyl glucosamine, sialic acid, mannose and chondroitin sulfate. The number of the deposits was higher in patients with brain disorder such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer type dementia, dementia with tangles or Down's syndrome, and in some aged individuals, in comparison to those in younger individuals. No deposits were detected in a few younger or aged individuals. Spherical deposits 3-10 microm in diameter may be an immature form of the corpora amylacea, since they were similar in the histochemical characteristics with lectin, immunohistochemical and conventional staining methods. However, differing staining ability by hematoxylin, periodic acid Schiff's reagent and antibodies against the intracellular degraded proteins such as ubiquitin and tau-protein was observed. The antibodies against ubiquitin and tau-protein showed clear reactivity with the corpora amylacea and no reactivity with spherical deposits, indicating that the corpora amylacea has an intracellular origin and spherical deposits an extracellular matrix origin. The results obtained in this study indicate that not only neuronal degeneration but also unusual glycometabolism in neurons may disturb the neuronal function and cause brain disorders, and that spherical deposits may cause dysfunction of the neuronal network in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus which is closely linked with recognition and memory functions. Glyconutrients may increase wellbeing.

Some of the best glyconutrients come from a company called Mannatech. Mannatech is the world leader in this field.

Interview with Dr Steve Nugent

Can you tell us about the relationship between synthetic chemicals – which have been released since about 1930 – and disease. Is there a correlation between the levels of free radicals produced by these chemicals and disease?

There is a definite correlation. Prior to 1930 there were two synthetic chemicals known on planet Earth. Since 1930 we now have more than 75,000 synthetic chemical, and these are just the ones registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency, which has registered more chemicals than any other government agency in the world. But that is not all the chemicals! In fact there are new chemicals being made every day. When a scientist realizes that he can make something, he does, and often doesn’t think about the consequences. There are a couple of scary aspects to this.

The first frightening aspect is not just the fact that there are 75,000 synthetic chemicals, but why do not belong here. They are not natural to the planet and therefore they are not natural to our bodies. Logically we would expect an adverse response to them. Only approximately 7% of the 75,000 chemicals have been tested for safety in humans. Others have been tested in rats and so on. The 5,000 chemicals that have been tested in humans account for approximately 3.5 billion kilos of toxins put into the Earth’s environment every year – just from the 7% that has been tested. If we tested the rest, who knows what the number would be? Perhaps it would be different, perhaps it would be very different – we just don’t know. Of the ones that have been tested, we now know that many of them cause free radical disease such as heart disease and cancer. There are 29 diseases which are directly linked to oxidative stress. We also now see links between some chemicals and nervous system disorders, including developmental disorders in children. We do whatever we can in an environmental sense to try to reverse this trend with industry. On a daily basis, what an individual can do for themselves is to take the best possible antioxidants so that they can render the free radicals harmless.

On that point, can particular diseases be linked directly to synthetic chemicals in the environment?

The one that would be the biggest is breast cancer. There are various chemicals which are linked directly to breast cancer, and it is very difficult these days to find in any country someone who has not been affected by breast cancer. There are 80% of the people in any group who will respond. Cancers, including lung cancer, colon cancer and many others, are definitely linked to chemical toxins.

Is the prostate gland affected by synthetic chemicals?

Yes. There are several chemical compounds which are the by-products of the production of various types of plastic materials – anywhere from plastic bottles to plastic foam. These chemicals tend to disrupt normal glandular function and have an adverse effect on the gland’s ability, not only to function correctly, but also to be protected from cancer.

To consumers, the basic building blocks of nutrients are well known: essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. What Mannatech has discovered is a brand new category of important nutrients: glyconutrients. Following our initial breakthrough discovery, Mannatech filed patents across the globe. Ambrotose® complex has now been issued patents in 29 countries, including the United States. Securing its position of leadership, Mannatech dedicates approximately 30 employees to its science department, and continues to develop new technologies, review research, and conduct studies.

Interview with Dr Steve Nugent

Did you do your research into antioxidants because you viewed them as the primary factor in the prevention of most diseases?

It follows naturally. We do know scientifically that oxidative stress is an umbrella term. Free radicals are what actually cause the damage. A free radical can be rendered harmless if there is an extra electron that can be lent to it. Antioxidants are called antioxidants because they carry extra electrons which they do not require. When they come in contract with a free radical, they lend the electron to it, rendering the free radical harmless. We could simplify this by saying that if you have sufficient levels of antioxidants to meet the free radical stress, you can render the free radicals harmless and have no damage done to your cells. We know that oxidative stress from free radicals can lead to degenerative diseases like various forms of cancer, heart disease and so on. With this in mind, in the 21st century – as far as I’m concerned – the most important thing for you to ingest each day would be antioxidants.

Antioxidants come in many forms. At what we might call the ‘high end’ you have the OPCs, while at the other end we have beta carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E and the mineral, zinc and selenium. Are there any others that we should be ingesting?

In the beginning I did what every other doctor does when they get involved with antioxidants, which was to prescribe individual antioxidants. But research says that this is not the correct approach, the medical model is to isolate a selected component and put it into tremendously high levels as a drug. Studies that have been done recently showed that when beta carotene was isolated and used in extremely high levels (which are not natural), it caused health problems. It should never be used in such quantities. Health is synergy and our model should be nature. Plants offer us the best possible model to study. A healthy plant has a particular ratio of nutrients within it. If you unbalance that ratio deliberately, the plant will become unhealthy. If you put too much of a particular nutrient into the soil in which a plant is growing, you end up by killing the plant. So nature provides the very best example for us – it is the ratio of antioxidants as well as the synergy which are important. Different plant antioxidants within them so that a synergy – one type of antioxidant to its cofactor and perhaps with other antioxidants – occurs within the same plant. That results in optimal antioxidant balance as opposed to using the drug model and isolating antioxidants, such as 2,000 units of vitamin A or 10,000 units of vitamin E and so on. That is not productive – it is not the best science and we should avoid doing it.

Mannatech announced its flagship product, Ambrotose, 1996 based on the discovery that the body’s immune system needs eight plant-based sugars – also known as glyconutrients – to function properly. Medical research has shown that cells use these glyconutrients to communicate with each other so the immune system, when confronted, can mount a coordinated response to foreign invasion. These sugars are plucose, fucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylneuraminic acid. According to Mannatech, six of these eight glyconutrients are deficient in the modern diet, largely because foods today are heavily processed and balanced meals have succumbed to fast food. Mannatech scoured the world to find new, rich sources of the missing nutrients.

Here’s to your health

Medical profession is increasingly turning to nutrition education

Registered pharmacist JaeHi Neil had a vision. Time after time she had witnessed an extreme lack of understanding among the medical profession and consumers alike of the need for proper nutrition.

Has no one been paying attention? In 1994, the U.S. Congress passed an act stating that proper nutrition is critical to health. In 2002, the Journal of the American Medical Association stated that, given poor nutrition, every adult should supplement their diet. In 2003, the World Health Organization announced that diet could have strong effects on health throughout life.

Ms. Neil realized education was the key. In 2000 she co-founded Proevity Continuing Education Group to educate health care providers to the growing shift from traditional allopathic models to integrative and complementary wellness.

Proevity has seen an increase in the number of licensed medical professionals attending the group’s seminars. Today, medical physicians, pharmacists, dentists and nurses comprise more than 40 percent of the its participants – double the number who received Proevity’s continuing education credits just four years earlier.

Proevity (www.Proevity.com) now has courses accredited through the International Association for Continuing Education and Training, providing Australian and New Zealand health care professionals with the opportunity to learn more about nutrition and the burgeoning science of glyconutrition.

This focus on health and nutrition comes as international communities increasingly address wellness. One quarter of all deaths in New Zealand, for example, were caused by cancer, according to a 2000 study released by the New Zealand Ministry of Health. Heart disease is just as prevalent. Were these causes of death as common just 50 years ago?

At Mannatech, a U.S. manufacturer of proprietary glyconutritional supplements and wellness products, such questions are important. Years ago, the company’s top leaders decided to take an entirely new approach to serving health-conscious consumers, and every day presents opportunities to put the company’s vision, “Better Solutions to Global Health,” into meaningful action.

“The problem is that we really do not have a healthcare system at all—-we have a disease-care system,” says Mannatech’s Medical Director, Stephen Boyd, M.D., Ph.D. “It’s wonderful at treating diseases after they are diagnosed, but there is little incentive for physicians to keep us well before that point.”

Moreover, according to Dr. Boyd, many people mistakenly believe that there are “miracle” cures to treat all their ailments, when in fact science has not made much progress against viruses such as the common cold. Our efforts to stay healthy have been compromised by the declining nutritional value of our foods.

Perhaps consumers and the medical profession should look, in part, to poor dietary habits, which are rampant throughout much of the Western world.

“There’s no question that good nutrition is crucial in the outcome of illness,” Dr. Boyd says. “With each passing day, the population is actually becoming less healthy.”

The medical community increasingly is coming to understand the benefits of nutritional supplementation. In 2002, the Journal of the American Medical Association—the publication of one of the United States’ most respected medical groups—stated, “Most people do not consume an optimal amount of all vitamins by diet alone. . . . It appears prudent for all adults to take vitamin supplements.”

Attempting to address illness by medicine alone has caused its share of problems. Surging medical costs and an aging population have put many nations’ healthcare systems on track to insolvency, so things may very well get worse.

“The current cost to develop a new drug, for example, is approximately $800 million, and virtually every new drug is more expensive than the one it was designed to replace,” Dr. Boyd says. “If something is not done to change current trends, health care as we know it will one day be unaffordable.”

Clearly then, consumers should not just wait to fall ill and then hope that physicians and insurance companies will come to their rescue, Mannatech’s leaders say.

“The only thing that really makes sense is staying healthy,” says Mannatech CEO Sam Caster. “There’s an international movement urging people toward nutrition that supports a healthy lifestyle. As part of this movement, Mannatech has discovered a new class of vital nutrients known as glyconutrients that are changing the landscape of wellness.”

“The baby boom generation is making wellness one of its top agendas,” he adds. “An entire generation is saying, ‘We want to maintain our quality of life, we want to keep our vitality, and we’re not willing to accept the traditional aging paradigm.’”

To that end Mannatech’s supplements enlist technology to provide the body with natural, plant-based nutrients and help maintain a solid foundation for lifelong wellbeing, Mr. Caster says.

“Consumers are increasingly concerned about taking charge of their health,” he adds. “New advances in vitamin and mineral technology, skin care and DNA prognostics are just a few that distinguish Mannatech within the new, burgeoning wellness industry.”

“I see this industry exploding,” Mr. Caster says, “and we will continue being a leader, helping to provide products.

Destined to Rise Above

Mannatech had the right product at the right time

In 1994, after years of controversy among lawmakers, nutrition experts, manufacturers and consumers, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health & Education Act, a wide-ranging piece of legislation that for the first time gave “dietary supplement” a legal definition.

For manufacturers in general, this meant official validation of the public’s surging interest in supplements. For Mannatech, a company that had just been launched in suburban Dallas, the act meant a green light just as its revolutionary discovery of glyconutrients came to fruition.

“Prior to 1994, if you wanted to associate a health claim with a product, you had to develop it as a drug,” says Stephen Boyd, M.D., Ph.D., Mannatech’s senior medical director. “The new law instead allowed companies to use their science as educational material in support of a nutritional supplement.”

In Mannatech’s case, the science in question was glycobiology, at the time an obscure field devoted to the study of carbohydrates. At several companies, researchers who later joined Mannatech had been studying the function of these sugar molecules inside the body with a growing focus on the aloe vera plant.

Mannose sugar (acemannan) had been pinpointed as a primary factor in aloe’s beneficial properties. “Our researchers hypothesized that certain sugars represented a new category of nutrients, just like vitamins, minerals and amino acids,” says Sam Caster, chairman, founder and CEO of Mannatech. “We were the first to recognize that, while these sugars are essential to the proper structure and function of every human cell, they are deficient or missing in modern diets.” In 1994, Mr. Caster secured a license to distribute Manapol, a compound derived from aloe vera. The patented process for stabilizing this beneficial molecule was the key technology that he used to launch Mannatech.

Other advances quickly followed, culminating in the introduction of Ambrotose, a unique, patented complex of multiple glyconutrients. Since then, Mannatech’s success has been nothing less than astounding. “I would say 90 percent of it was due to the effectiveness of this new product,” Mr. Caster says. “We knew very early on that we were going to be successful, because we saw such an incredible response from our customers.”

Mannatech is today a worldwide hit, with nearly 30 products aimed at health, nutrition, weight management, sports performance and skin care sold in numerous countries. Hundreds of thousands of independent associates are glad to share the benefits of Mannatech’s products with others, and many of them find even greater satisfaction in the company’s extensive charitable efforts to help medically fragile children in more than 75 countries.

Though much has been accomplished, the best may be yet to come, Mannatech’s leaders say, as glycobiology moves from the footnotes of science textbooks to the front pages of prestigious journals. More than 20,000 peer-reviewed articles have now been published on the biological functions of these sugars, a great vindication in light of the skepticism that once greeted the topic.

“Glycobiology has caught the eye of mainstream medicine and the pharmaceutical industry, and it has become a very hot area of research,” says Robert Sinnott, M.N.S., Ph.D., Mannatech’s chief science officer. “We were one of the first players in glyconutrients, and the first to do it right as a supplement.”
